INTRODUCTION TO ISAIAH CHAPTER 14

Israel will be coming home, however they must serve their 70 year sentence.  The good news is that their captors will end up being their servants.  They have a new song on their lips they are singing a song full of jeer and derision─a song describing the king as a tyrant filled with fury an arrogant oppressor who is hushed from his mad rage. The taunt continues with phrases about being smote, trampled and never ending blows─a ruler who angrily gave the people a good thrashing and in his rage furiously tyrannized them unceasingly with no one stepping in to help. The song names him as Lucifer and then sings about his death and burial without a state funeral.  The song tells us that Lucifer is none other than the king of Babylon.  The song continues with the King of Babylon arriving in hell with a reception from others just like him.  The commentary section will supply all the details.

EXPOSITION TO ISAIAH CHAPTER 14

1For the LORD will have mercy on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and set them in their own land: and the strangers shall be joined with them, and they shall cleave to the house of Jacob.

This special class of God’s chosen ones who are sometimes called Jacob, is going to be dealt with gently.  He is going to bring them back to their homeland and foreigners will be joined with them and they will throw their lot in with Jacob.

CROSS REFERENCE SCRIPTURES

THAT CORROBORATE THE TEXT:

Isa 40:1-2  Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God.  Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the LORD’S hand double for all her sins.

Isa 44:21-22  Remember these, O Jacob and Israel; for thou art my servant: I have formed thee; thou art my servant: O Israel, thou shalt not be forgotten of me.  I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me; for I have redeemed thee.

Isa 54:7-8  For a small moment have I forsaken thee; but with great mercies will I gather thee.  In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the LORD thy Redeemer.   Read:  Lev 26:40-42; Neh 1:8-9

2And the people shall take them, and bring them to their place: and the house of Israel shall possess them in the land of the LORD for servants and handmaids: and they shall take them captives, whose captives they were; and they shall rule over their oppressors.

Jacob will be escorted home and repossess their homeland and their former slave owners will now be their slaves and they will rule over them.  They will capture them who had formally held them in captivity.

CROSS REFERENCE SCRIPTURES

THAT MAKE THE CASE:

Isa 60:9-12  Surely the isles shall wait for me, and the ships of Tarshish first, to bring thy sons from far, their silver and their gold with them, unto the name of the LORD thy God, and to the Holy One of Israel, because he hath glorified thee.  And the sons of strangers shall build up thy walls, and their kings shall minister unto thee: for in my wrath I smote thee, but in my favour have I had mercy on thee.  Therefore thy gates shall be open continually; they shall not be shut day nor night; that men may bring unto thee the forces of the Gentiles, and that their kings may be brought.  For the nation and kingdom that will not serve thee shall perish; yea, those nations shall be utterly wasted.  Read:  Isa 61:5; Ezr 2:65; Isa 60:14

3And it shall come to pass in the day that the LORD shall give thee rest from thy sorrow, and from thy fear, and from the hard bondage wherein thou wast made to serve,

They had been in grim servitude and suffered in agony and misery while in slavery and chains but the prophet tells them that in spite of their turmoil that there are better days ahead.

CROSS REFERENCE SCRIPTURES

THAT ILLUMINATE THE TEXT:

Isa 32:18  And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places;  Read:  Deu 28:65-68; Ezr 9:8-9

4That thou shalt take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, How hath the oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased!

They have a new song on their lips─it is a taunt-song─they are singing a song full of jeer and derision─a song describing the king as a tyrant filled with fury─a bully that has received his just due─an arrogant oppressor who is hushed from his mad rage.

CROSS REFERENCE SCRIPTURES

THAT INDORSE THE TEXT:

Jer 27:6-7  And now have I given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant; and the beasts of the field have I given him also to serve him.  And all nations shall serve him, and his son, and his son’s son, until the very time of his land come: and then many nations and great kings shall serve themselves of him.

Jer 50:22-23  A sound of battle is in the land, and of great destruction.  How is the hammer of the whole earth cut asunder and broken! how is Babylon become a desolation among the nations!   Read  Jer 51:20-24

5The LORD hath broken the staff of the wicked, and the sceptre of the rulers.

The song continues with phrases describing his lawless reign as a despot godless power that has become a “has been”.

CROSS REFERENCE SCRIPTURES THAT

LEND EVIDENCE TO THE TEXT:

Isa 14:29  Rejoice not thou, whole Palestina, because the rod of him that smote thee is broken: for out of the serpent’s root shall come forth a cockatrice, and his fruit shall be a fiery flying serpent.

Jer 48:15-17  Moab is spoiled, and gone up out of her cities, and his chosen young men are gone down to the slaughter, saith the King, whose name is the LORD of hosts.  The calamity of Moab is near to come, and his affliction hasteth fast.  All ye that are about him, bemoan him; and all ye that know his name, say, How is the strong staff broken, and the beautiful rod!

6He who smote the people in wrath with a continual stroke, he that ruled the nations in anger, is persecuted, and none hindereth.

The taunt continues with the phrases about being smote, trampled and never ending blows─a ruler who angrily gave the people a good thrashing and in his rage furiously tyrannized them unceasingly with no one stepping in to help.

CROSS REFERENCE SCRIPTURES

THAT DEMONSTRATE THE TEXT:

Isa 46:10-11  Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:  Calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man that executeth my counsel from a far country: yea, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it.

7The whole earth is at rest, and is quiet: they break forth into singing.

Now it’s a new song on every lip and in every heart─the whole world bursts into singing ─peace and quiet and tranquility has finally arrived.

CROSS REFERENCE SCRIPTURES

THAT ILLUSTRATE THE TEXT:

Isa 49:13  Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains: for the LORD hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted.

Psa 126:1-3  A Song of degrees. When the LORD turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream.  Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The LORD hath done great things for them.  The LORD hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.

Jer 51:48  Then the heaven and the earth, and all that is therein, shall sing for Babylon: for the spoilers shall come unto her from the north, saith the LORD.

8Yea, the fir trees rejoice at thee, and the cedars of Lebanon, saying, Since thou art laid down, no feller is come up against us.

The cedars of Lebanon and the fir trees have burst out in song─the theme of their song was “since you are cut down, we are not cut down.”

CROSS REFERENCE SCRIPTURES

THAT AUTHENTICATE THE TEXT:

Isa 55:12  For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.

Eze 31:16  I made the nations to shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to hell with them that descend into the pit: and all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, shall be comforted in the nether parts of the earth.

9Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming: it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations.

Hell was excited for their arrival─it was all astir─it was waiting for their arrival─kings and potentates and world leaders were notified of their arrival─these leaders who had long been dead roused to meet the kings of Babylon.

CROSS REFERENCE SCRIPTURES THAT

ESTABLISH THE CERTAINTY OF THE TEXT:

Pro 15:24  The way of life is above to the wise, that he may depart from hell beneath.

Eze 32:21-32  The strong among the mighty shall speak to him out of the midst of hell with them that help him: they are gone down, they lie uncircumcised, slain by the sword.  Asshur is there and all her company: his graves are about him: all of them slain, fallen by the sword:  Whose graves are set in the sides of the pit, and her company is round about her grave: all of them slain, fallen by the sword, which caused terror in the land of the living.  There is Elam and all her multitude round about her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, which are gone down uncircumcised into the nether parts of the earth, which caused their terror in the land of the living; yet have they borne their shame with them that go down to the pit.  They have set her a bed in the midst of the slain with all her multitude: her graves are round about him: all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword: though their terror was caused in the land of the living, yet have they borne their shame with them that go down to the pit: he is put in the midst of them that be slain.  There is Meshech, Tubal, and all her multitude: her graves are round about him: all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword, though they caused their terror in the land of the living.  And they shall not lie with the mighty that are fallen of the uncircumcised, which are gone down to hell with their weapons of war: and they have laid their swords under their heads, but their iniquities shall be upon their bones, though they were the terror of the mighty in the land of the living.  Yea, thou shalt be broken in the midst of the uncircumcised, and shalt lie with them that are slain with the sword.  There is Edom, her kings, and all her princes, which with their might are laid by them that were slain by the sword: they shall lie with the uncircumcised, and with them that go down to the pit.

30  There be the princes of the north, all of them, and all the Zidonians, which are gone down with the slain; with their terror they are ashamed of their might; and they lie uncircumcised with them that be slain by the sword, and bear their shame with them that go down to the pit.  Pharaoh shall see them, and shall be comforted over all his multitude, even Pharaoh and all his army slain by the sword, saith the Lord GOD.   For I have caused my terror in the land of the living: and he shall be laid in the midst of the uncircumcised with them that are slain with the sword, even Pharaoh and all his multitude, saith the Lord GOD.

10All they shall speak and say unto thee, Art thou also become weak as we? art thou become like unto us?

They are going to hail their arrival and each one has a prepared speech about how they are now like one of us─they are greeted with “you are as weak as we are”.

CROSS REFERENCE SCRIPTURES THAT PRESENT OVERWHELMING PROOF OF THE TEXT:

Ecc 2:16  For there is no remembrance of the wise more than of the fool for ever; seeing that which now is in the days to come shall all be forgotten. And how dieth the wise man? as the fool.

Luk 16:20-23  And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,  And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.  And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;  And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

11Thy pomp is brought down to the grave, and the noise of thy viols: the worm is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee.

Their speech continues in Hell about how they have lost their magnificence and pomp─how their power has been brought down and the music in their palace has at last ceased.  They are reminded of their mortality─they now have maggots for sheets and worms for a bed.

CROSS REFERENCE SCRIPTURES

THAT ATTEST TO THE TEXT:

Eze 26:13  And I will cause the noise of thy songs to cease; and the sound of thy harps shall be no more heard.

Eze 32:19-20  Whom dost thou pass in beauty? go down, and be thou laid with the uncircumcised.  They shall fall in the midst of them that are slain by the sword: she is delivered to the sword: draw her and all her multitudes.   Read:  Dan 5:1-4, 25-30; Isa 66:24; Job 17:13-14; Job 24:20-24; Mar 9:43-48

12How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!

Lucifer, who had enslaved the nations, was now cut down to the ground.  He, who had been a rising shining star, was now limp and lying in his grave.  You, who were blasphemous and satanic, lie in a pool of blood in your palace in Babylon.

CROSS REFERENCE SCRIPTURES

THAT ARE CONCLUSIVE AND FINAL:

Isa 34:4  And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree.

Eze 28:13-17 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.  Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.  Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.  By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.  Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.  Read:  Rev 12:7-12; Jer 51:20-24

13For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:

In his mind he thought that he would end up in heaven─He the shining star of the morning would be exalted to a throne above all of God’s worthy ones.  He prides himself as the greatest and would preside over heavens mount of assembly.

CROSS REFERENCE SCRIPTURES

THAT RATIFY THE TEXT:

Isa 47:7-10  And thou saidst, I shall be a lady for ever: so that thou didst not lay these things to thy heart, neither didst remember the latter end of it.  Therefore hear now this, thou that art given to pleasures, that dwellest carelessly, that sayest in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children:  But these two things shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy sorceries, and for the great abundance of thine enchantments.  For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness: thou hast said, None seeth me. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath perverted thee; and thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me.  Read:  Eze 28:12-15; Eze 29:3; Dan 4:30-31; Eze 28:9

14I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

He sees himself rising above the clouds and being like God.

CROSS REFERENCE SCRIPTURES

THAT BEAR OUT THE TEXT:

Isa 37:23-25  Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.  By thy servants hast thou reproached the Lord, and hast said, By the multitude of my chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon; and I will cut down the tall cedars thereof, and the choice fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the height of his border, and the forest of his Carmel.  I have digged, and drunk water; and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of the besieged places.

Eze 28:9  Wilt thou yet say before him that slayeth thee, I am God? but thou shalt be a man, and no God, in the hand of him that slayeth thee.

2Th 2:4  Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

15Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.

Instead of ascending to heaven and towering above all of heavens worthys he lands straight in hell with his body rotting in an open field.

CROSS REFERENCE SCRIPTURES THAT

SPEAK VOLUMES ABOUT THE TEXT:

Eze 28:8-9  They shall bring thee down to the pit, and thou shalt die the deaths of them that are slain in the midst of the seas.  Wilt thou yet say before him that slayeth thee, I am God? but thou shalt be a man, and no God, in the hand of him that slayeth thee.

Mat 11:23  And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.  Read:  Act 12:22-23; Rev 19:20; Eze 32:23

 16They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;

This abominable wretch doesn’t get a “state funeral” and all onlookers who see him lying like a pauper under other slain carcasses will say “is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms.” Can this be the man who once ruled the world and caused kingdoms to quiver?

CROSS REFERENCE SCRIPTURES

THAT SHED LIGHT ON THE TEXT:

Psa 58:10-11  The righteous shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance: he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.  So that a man shall say, Verily there is a reward for the righteous: verily he is a God that judgeth in the earth.

Psa 52:7  Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.

Jer 50:23  How is the hammer of the whole earth cut asunder and broken! how is Babylon become a desolation among the nations!

17That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?

Is this the body of the man who overthrew cities, turned the world into a desert and never allowed those who had been put into slavery of shut up in prison to go home?

CROSS REFERENCE SCRIPTURES

THAT VERIFY THE TEXT:

Joe 2:3  A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them.

Isa 45:13  I have raised him up in righteousness, and I will direct all his ways: he shall build my city, and he shall let go my captives, not for price nor reward, saith the LORD of hosts.

18All the kings of the nations, even all of them, lie in glory, every one in his own house.

Other kings had a stately funeral─they lie in state─dignataries from other nations came to pay them honor─but this serpent was not granted such a funeral─others had an honorable burial, but this tyrant receives no such honors.

CROSS REFERENCE SCRIPTURES THAT GIVE COUNTEREVIDENCE TO THE TEXT:

Ecc 6:3  If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.

Ecc 12:5  Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and fears shall be in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:

19But thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch, and as the raiment of those that are slain, thrust through with a sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a carcase trodden under feet.

They threw his body out of the grave like something monstrous and left him unburied like a “road kill.”  He received the same treatment as bloody stained clothes of someone murdered.

CROSS REFERENCE SCRIPTURES

THAT CONFIRM THE TEXT:

1Ki 21:19  And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou killed, and also taken possession? And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the LORD, In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick thy blood, even thine

2Ki 9:26  Surely I have seen yesterday the blood of Naboth, and the blood of his sons, saith the LORD; and I will requite thee in this plat, saith the LORD. Now therefore take and cast him into the plat of ground, according to the word of the LORD.

Jer 8:1-2  At that time, saith the LORD, they shall bring out the bones of the kings of Judah, and the bones of his princes, and the bones of the priests, and the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, out of their graves:  And they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth.

Jer 16:6  Both the great and the small shall die in this land: they shall not be buried, neither shall men lament for them, nor cut themselves, nor make themselves bald for them:

Jer 22:19  He shall be buried with the burial of an ass, drawn and cast forth beyond the gates of Jerusalem.

20Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land, and slain thy people: the seed of evildoers shall never be renowned.

No funeral─no tombstone─no ceremony─no mosalem─his mangled carcase lies in an open grave.  He had ruined his country and slaughtered his people─he was bad to the bone and his descendants would never rule the earth.  They were the offspring of the wicked─a brood of evildoers and no one wanted to see them again is high public office so their names were to be forgotten.

CROSS REFERENCE SCRIPTURES THAT

GIVE AUTHORITIVE DATA TO THE TEXT:

Psa 37:28  For the LORD loveth judgment, and forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved for ever: but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off.

21Prepare slaughter for his children for the iniquity of their fathers; that they do not rise, nor possess the land, nor fill the face of the world with cities.

The father’s guilt had brought about the slaughtering of his children.  They must never rise again to conquer the world.  His children and his relatives were slaughtered.

Psa 109:13  Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out.

22For I will rise up against them, saith the LORD of hosts, and cut off from Babylon the name, and remnant, and son, and nephew, saith the LORD.

It was genocide for the remnant of his family─sons ─grandsons and nephews─they were destroyed root and branch─a decree of the Lord!

Jer 51:25  Behold, I am against thee, O destroying mountain, saith the LORD, which destroyest all the earth: and I will stretch out mine hand upon thee, and roll thee down from the rocks, and will make thee a burnt mountain.

24The LORD of hosts hath sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand:

It had already been decided and God had on oath sworn that it would come to pass so their doom was to be executed.  God planned it and it happened.

CROSS REFERENCE SCRIPTURES

THAT MAKE THE CASE:

Heb 6:16-18  For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife.  Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:  That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:

25That I will break the Assyrian in my land, and upon my mountains tread him under foot: then shall his yoke depart from off them, and his burden depart from off their shoulders.

26This is the purpose that is purposed upon the whole earth: and this is the hand that is stretched out upon all the nations.

CROSS REFERENCE SCRIPTURES

THAT DEMONSTRATE THE TEXT:

Zep 3:6-8  I have cut off the nations: their towers are desolate; I made their streets waste, that none passeth by: their cities are destroyed, so that there is no man, that there is none inhabitant.  I said, Surely thou wilt fear me, thou wilt receive instruction; so their dwelling should not be cut off, howsoever I punished them: but they rose early, and corrupted all their doings.  Therefore wait ye upon me, saith the LORD, until the day that I rise up to the prey: for my determination is to gather the nations, that I may assemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them mine indignation, even all my fierce anger: for all the earth shall be devoured with the fire of my jealousy.

27For the LORD of hosts hath purposed, and who shall disannul it? and his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?

When God makes a plan who can unmake it? His plan cannot be disannulled or made void.

28In the year that king Ahaz died was this burden.

Isaiah reduces the focal length of the telescope of prophecy to an event that had happened earlier in his career.

2Ki 16:20  And Ahaz slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David: and Hezekiah his son reigned in his stead.

29Rejoice not thou, whole Palestina, because the rod of him that smote thee is broken: for out of the serpent’s root shall come forth a cockatrice, and his fruit shall be a fiery flying serpent.

He warns them not to celebrate too soon over the death of their oppressor.  Ahaz is dead but out of this serpent’s root (Ahaz) a─snake will come (Hezekiah) and from his roots will come Manasseh.  Even though the rod is broken his grandson will be a worse scourge than his grandfather and out of him will come a fiery flying serpent.  He is the worst king that this world ever knew.

The prophet says that the firstborn of the poor shall have food and that the beggars shall lie down in safety but that God is going to kill her posterity by hunger and sword.  They will be wiped out including the roots of her family.

THAT PRESENT OVERWHELMING PROOF

OF THE TEXT:

Jer 47:1-7  The word of the LORD that came to Jeremiah the prophet against the Philistines, before that Pharaoh smote Gaza.  Thus saith the LORD; Behold, waters rise up out of the north, and shall be an overflowing flood, and shall overflow the land, and all that is therein; the city, and them that dwell therein: then the men shall cry, and all the inhabitants of the land shall howl.  At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his strong horses, at the rushing of his chariots, and at the rumbling of his wheels, the fathers shall not look back to their children for feebleness of hands;  Because of the day that cometh to spoil all the Philistines, and to cut off from Tyrus and Zidon every helper that remaineth: for the LORD will spoil the Philistines, the remnant of the country of Caphtor.  Baldness is come upon Gaza; Ashkelon is cut off with the remnant of their valley: how long wilt thou cut thyself?  O thou sword of the LORD, how long will it be ere thou be quiet? put up thyself into thy scabbard, rest, and be still.  How can it be quiet, seeing the LORD hath given it a charge against Ashkelon, and against the sea shore? there hath he appointed it.

Amo 1:6-8  Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they carried away captive the whole captivity, to deliver them up to Edom:  But I will send a fire on the wall of Gaza, which shall devour the palaces thereof:  And I will cut off the inhabitant from Ashdod, and him that holdeth the sceptre from Ashkelon, and I will turn mine hand against Ekron: and the remnant of the Philistines shall perish, saith the Lord GOD.

31Howl, O gate; cry, O city; thou, whole Palestina, art dissolved: for there shall come from the north a smoke, and none shall be alone in his appointed times.

Howl, and wail─shriek and cry for help─a great enemy is coming from the north and this army is leaving a trail of smoke.

THAT ATTEST TO THE TEXT:

Jer 25:15-20  For thus saith the LORD God of Israel unto me; Take the wine cup of this fury at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send thee, to drink it.  And they shall drink, and be moved, and be mad, because of the sword  Then took I the cup at the LORD’S hand, and made all the nations to drink, unto whom the LORD had sent me:  To wit, Jerusalem, and the cities of Judah, and the kings thereof, and the princes thereof, to make them a desolation, an astonishment, an hissing, and a curse; as it is this day;  Pharaoh king of Egypt, and his servants, and his princes, and all his people;  And all the mingled people, and all the kings of the land of Uz, and all the kings of the land of the Philistines, and Ashkelon, and Azzah, and Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod,

32What shall one then answer the messengers of the nation? That the LORD hath founded Zion, and the poor of his people shall trust in it.

Tell the ambassadors of other nations that the LORD hath founded Zion and that her people hath found refuge in her.
